| Tool for Removing Live Center |
| I hope this is
pertinent and that I haven't been removing my live center wrong.
Situation is that the live center does not have a tang that ejects
it from the tailstock like the drill chuck arbors do. I've been
using a piece of flatstock with a u-shaped cutout that straddles the
center's arbor and striking the flatstock with a small hammer to
eject it. Last night I turned a piece of plastic that does the job
by pushing against the inner race of the live center. I turned the
plastic to go around the spindle of the tailstock. I left a lip
inside that the end of the spindle will fit against. On the outside
it has a lip that fits the face of the inner race. A hole in the
center allows insertion of the live center arbor. In operation, you
install the piece when you install the live center. When you want to
remove the center, you back the spindle as if you were removing a
tanged arbor. As the spindle goes inside the tailstock and the
plastic tool contacts the tailstock housing which pushes the outer
lip of the tool against the face of the inner race and ejects the
center. Works like a charm. Just an idea that works for me; maybe
others can use it. Dave

| Dave, I had the same problem. I just
epoxied a 'button' on the end to make it a little longer. May
work for you. Larry(14000) |
| The tang ends are
not hardened so I drilled a small hole in it and epoxied a short
piece of 10d common nail, head end out, into it. I've done this now
on 3 short tangs. Frank (14001) |
| Knockout bars |
| Knockout bars are
of course kosher. If you are worried about harming the tool, face
the end with either a piece of Delrin, or hard wood. I shy away from
lead. But the other 2 will work just fine. Ron (17715) |
| I found a piece of
copper round stock long enough to use as a knockout bar on my 9B. Its
probably bussbar material (I'm an electrician) I don't remember where
I got it, but it does a nice job, and doesn't leave any dings. I'm
also not fond of lead. RC
