Riser blocks
Bill, I'm curious about a 9" with 4" risers. Is there any chance you could snap a couple of pics for me? Zed (11397)
I've never seen any, but looks like with some chunks of iron a mill and/or surface grinder you might make some? Lew (11398)
No mil and no grinder. Bill (11402)
Well when the time is a bit more free I was thinking the same thing. All I want is about 3" of rise. to give me 15" of swing I'll have to make on for the tail stock too. Kerry (11404)
If riser blocks fit under the head stock and tail stock of a lathe with 16 inches of swing, wouldn't the cone belt be too short and require a much longer one? What else would I need to change? Philip (11407)
Yeah if you have a vertical drive I have a horizontal and it will put the belt at an angle but not enough to need a new belt. you will have problems with the power feed being that the lead screw is on the bed and the drive gears on the headstock, you will have added some distance between them I haven't figured out that one yet. Kerry (11410)
Like I said I've never seen them; looks like there would need to be one under the compound also (or some way to raise the tool holder. Lew (11411)
There is more to it than just a couple of riser blocks. Sorry I was so terse with my answer. These are not simple quick change conversions. I think Tony's www.lathes.co.uk site had info and pics of these yes, it will involve a new belt, and I think another idler gear in the gear train. I can't recall if it involved a different bajo or not. I have never seen one in the wild, only heard about their existence. dennis (11412)
If you want to see an example of riser blocks go to the Files section and look at "Westers Lathe Pics". Now those are riser blocks! Jeff (11437)
You may need a longer banjo and additional idler gears (or a larger one) between the stud and gearbox, but check it out first. If this is necessary just replicate the existing idler stud and possibly use spacers to position the new idler(s) in line with the original one. If you add 1 idler the reverse tumbler will operate in the other direction, 2 additional idlers will return the reverse tumbler to the standard positions. (True idlers don't change the drive ratio, they just reverse the direction of motion and use up space.) Anthony (11438)

I just purchased a 16-24 south bend lathe with the single lever gearbox. I'm considering selling the risers with the idler gear and the end cover off this machine to someone wanting the extra swing. Does anyone know if this set up would work on the double lever model? It appears the only difference would be that the cover would have the hole in it for the sliding gear. I have a double lever cover from a 16" machine that I thought might work if I put this back to a 16 but realize the hole would have to be cut in. Randy (15170
I don't know, but I seem to remember something about the riser blocks needing to be fit at the factory. Unsure what the implications on resale might be. Jeff (15186)
Don't do it, that is a rare bird and some one wants or needs it. Sell it and buy one ready to go the way you want it. Much less trouble. Mark (15190)
